Distressed Sale: to pay for his tax trials Mickey Cohen, wearing his promotional hat, sells all his visible assets. 1951.

Potential bidders and the curious were entranced by luxury novelties like a $20 ($180 today) corkscrew, Mickey’s large collection of antique guns, and an assortment of bulletproof doors. Personally hawking the auction like a carnival huckster, Cohen posed with a long-barreled handgun, a vintage pistol, for Newsweek and television crews.

“If things were the other way around, I’d be bidding on these myself,” he enthused. He signed countless autographs and proudly presented his quality wares: “Everything is made with wooden pegs. There ain’t a nail in the joint.”

Even Toughie’s custom-made bed was on the block. Roused from his mahogany model of the finest dovetail construction, old Toughie was asleep in a cardboard box when the gavel went down. The tiny dog bed fetched a mere $35 ($300 today), while Mickey’s matching model, along with a double dresser with secret compartments, went for $575 ($5,150 today), less than half the original cost. Custom electronics were items of interest: a specially devised radio fetched a fair price, and a huge nineteen-inch television went for $1,150 ($10,200 today).
